Super Smash Bros. Headcanons
Please be patient with asks and submissions. This isn't a multi-owner or "mod-run" blog. All answered asks, submission-posting, updates, blog debugging/polishing, etc. are all done by one person.
I hold the right to delete asks and submissions that make me uncomfortable. It's very rare that this sort of thing happens, so it shouldn't be a huge concern (it's a lot more likely that tumblr eats it, or that I just haven't posted it yet). But while I try to keep this blog open for other people's headcanons and such, I don't want to sacrifice my own comfort for the sake of this blog.
Please put headcanons in the submissions. It's easier for me to actually post your headcanons if you put them in the submissions and not an ask. (Plus that means you don't have to worry about character limits.) If sent as an ask, there’s a good chance I’ll repost it as a text post and tag it as a submission (I’ll @ your url so you still get notified when it posts).
Make sure your submissions are as close to posting quality as possible. (Everyone accidentally makes a typo, and some people don't speak English as their first language, that's perfectly fine. But please at least check for spelling, and capitalize names properly. It makes it much easier on me.)
Please include a source when submitting an incorrect quote. If you made it up, just say you did and I'll tag it appropriately. If you don't know the source, say you don't know the source.
If asks and submissions are closed, that means they're closed. Don't send things through direct message, because I won't post it.
Only add the appropriate tags to your submissions. Don't tag headcanons as incorrect quotes unless your submission contains both an incorrect quote and a headcanon, etc.
Please keep different topics in separate asks or submissions. For example, if you want headcanons related to one character, but also want to tell me a bit of trivia, have those two things in separate asks. It’s easier for me to get to both in a non-clunky way.
If you're referencing or building off of an older headcanon, explain (preferably link) which post you're talking about. This blog is over 5 years old at this point, and there have been many headcanons over the years. This combined with Tumblr's broken search function makes it hard for me to find posts if you don't directly link to them.
Ship-related asks and submissions are okay, to an extent. I like various pairings myself, but please don't go overboard with them. Shipping can be fun! But it's less fun when every third post is about someone's ship, ya feel?
While content in the category below is off-limits for submissions, I (the blog owner) may still choose to post about those topics sometimes. Many (if not most) topics in the “don’t submit” category are valuable discussion topics, but they are topics that I would much prefer to approach on my own terms (or topics I would prefer to keep off the blog/avoid altogether). At the same time, certain topics play significant roles in many games/series tied to SSB, to the point where outright avoiding those topics virtually equates to not talking about those games/series at all. I still won’t post a whole lot about such topics, and any posts I do make will be tagged appropriately.
No NSFW asks/submissions. This goes for any sexual content, including but not limited to fetish/kink-related content, sexual position headcanons, and sex jokes.
No mentions of IRL bigotry. This includes but is not limited to racism, misogyny, queerphobia of any variety, ableism, fatphobia (including mentions of body-related insecurities), and other forms of bigotry that pertain to IRL issues rather than in a fictional/fantasy context. I want this blog to be a place for people to go to unwind, and being reminded about such things does the opposite of that for many people.
Please keep game-based political discussions to a minimum. While politics are a deeply ingrained aspect of some games connected to SSB (aspects I do believe to be valuable and necessary parts of those games), I simply would prefer not to discuss them in-depth on this blog. (See above.)
No IRL current events/political discussions. This is a Smash Bros blog.
No discourse. This includes but is not limited to asks/submissions containing or centered around discourse, community drama, or otherwise intended to incite or stir arguments, regarding SSB/video gaming or otherwise. (That goes triple for shipping discourse.)
No graphic violence. Asks/submissions containing imagery or detailed descriptions of gore, excessive blood, or torture.
Nothing related to J.K. Rowling’s works. That includes but is not limited to asks/submissions about the Harry Potter franchise or any other works by J.K. Rowling, or any incorrect quotes derived from those works. (Yes I am aware of the Kirby anime thing, if you were wondering.)
No ships between a child and an adult, or between relatives (blood or adopted). I may delete other ship-related posts if they cross my personal discomfort threshold (see rule 2 from the previous section), but that’s a lot less solid to define.
No reposting fanart from other people, whether that comes in the form of a still image, gif, video, etc. If you want to share someone’s creation with me, reblog from the op and tag me. When people repost content in the submissions without credit, it reflects badly on me.
No Twitter reposts, unless absolutely necessary to share official content. Any submissions must fall under the following criteria:
1) Any reposts from Twitter must be official content only. Official content includes things like canon info, official artwork, news, or interview snippets from developers regarding characters tied to Super Smash Bros.
2) Before submitting, search to see if the info was posted elsewhere, such as on an alternate website (such as Bluesky, Youtube, or on a wiki). Example 1: if the tweet is just sharing/summarizing screenshots of an interview, skip the tweet entirely and just use the embedded screenshots. Example 2: official artwork originally posted on Twitter that’s been reposted to a wiki should be shared from the wiki in question.
3) Any reposts must be a full screenshot of the tweet or thread, not a link to the post.
4) Links should be excluded from any submissions.
Bigotry towards ANY group, including but not limited to queerphobia of any variety, misogyny, racism, ableism, bashing religious groups, TERF rhetoric. Does not include asks/submissions painting such rhetoric in a negative light, which will get deleted but won’t result in a block.
Harassment, bashing, or inciting such behavior toward any real life individual (on or off tumblr). Includes but is not limited to suicide baiting, death threats, insults, and bigotry towards others.
Attempts to “probe” me on discourse. I maintain and post on this blog for fun. My idea of fun does not include getting angry on the internet, especially about subjects that don’t affect my personal life whatsoever. (That goes triple for shipping discourse.)
Bashing others’ headcanons. Discussing headcanons or disagreeing about headcanons is fine, but don’t shoot others’ headcanons down because you happen to not like it. Stating your own headcanons or reasons for disagreeing is fine, but being rude about it is not.
In many posts on this blog, I categorize certain fighters non-uniformly and build off of certain headcanons that were posted long ago. The purpose of this page is to catch you up on some of the more significant blog lore, in case you're feeling intimidated. The list may be updated in the future as new events unfold or as I remember other pieces of blog lore.
Pikachu line: The Pikachu in SSB/SSBM is different than the Pikachu in SSBB onward; the Pikachu in SSB/SSBM is now the Alolan Raichu you can get as an assist Pokemon. The multiple Pikachu variants in Ultimate are all separate fighters: standard Pikachu, the female Pikachu (nicknamed Pikette, as suggested by mushroomfusion245), and Pikachu Libre/Cosplay Pikachu. Additionally, Pichu and the spiky-eared Pichu are also separate.
Pokemon Trainers: The male Pokemon Trainer is Red, and the female Pokemon Trainer is Leaf. The Charizard, Ivysaur, and Squirtle used by Red are different than the Pokemon of the same species used by Leaf. Leaf is a shiny hunter, and her Pokemon are all shiny, even though her default costume doesn't reflect this.
Zelda franchise: The different reincarnations of the Zelda reps are different people.
Star Fox franchise: Star Fox 64/3D-Star Fox Command is a separate Star Fox timeline than Star Fox Zero. Fox, Falco, and Wolf from the SF64 timeline (who appeared in SSB-SSB4) are different people than the Fox, Falco, and Wolf from SFZero (who appear in Ultimate).
Mario variants: Dr. Mario and Metal Mario are both separate characters from Mario. Dr. Mario is the father of Mario and Luigi, and Metal Mario is a rival to Mario, based on his appearances in Smash and in certain Mario spinoffs such as MK8 and the Mario Golf series.
Mii Fighters: The default Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner in SSB4 are separate from their counterparts in SSBU. Sans from Undertale and Cuphead from Cuphead are both considered to be characters in Smash themselves, based on both costumes being paired with music tracks. (One of the Papyrus Q&A sections from the Undertale newsletter implies that Sans actually did receive an invitation.)
Different time period-based alts: Some characters, such as Ike, Bayonetta, and Cloud Strife, have alternate costumes based on their appearances in different games that are in the same timeline but take place at different points in time. These are generally not tagged as separate.
Different gender alts: Robin, Corrin, and others are generally all considered separate people from different timelines. These are generally not tagged as separate.
Chrom: The Chrom seen in Robin's Final Smash is from a separate timeline than the fighter Chrom. Fighter!Chrom is from F!Robin's timeline while assist!Chrom is from M!Robin's timeline.
King K. Rool: Based on his appearances in various trailers (particularly Joker’s) and World of Light, King K. Rool is assumed to be reformed and good, at least for the time being. (Any depictions after SSBU that so happen to contradict this headcanon are assumed to be future tense.)
Bucket: Joke that has to do with Crazy Hand + the assist trophies. Best experienced rather than explained: https://smashy-headcanons.tumblr.com/tagged/bucket/chrono
Residence: While in Smash, fighters live in a large castle. Those who haven't gotten a new game in a long time tend to live there full time.
Alcohol: Alcohol is strictly banned in Smash due to the Smash roster’s mixed and convoluted history with it, because figuring out the logistics gave Master Hand anxiety. (<- This is a joke headcanon I am saying this bc it’s funny.)
Q: There are inconsistencies between the pages on the blog vs the carrd? Is something wrong?
A: Updating a blog page takes fewer steps than updating the carrd, so sometimes I’ll jot something down on the blog page and plan to make changes to the carrd at a later date.Q: Is [insert topic] content allowed?
A: Read the rules for information on this subject. If you don't see your question answered already, then you can ask.Q: What is this lore that people keep referencing? Who is Raichu?
A: Read the Info for New People section for information on this subject. If your questions aren't answered, shoot me an ask and let me know what you're trying to figure out.Q: What's your queue at?/Why is my submission taking so long to post?
A: I'm a LOT busier than I was in yon early days (with other interests, multiple art/writing WIPs to juggle, and a day job), so I can't give you a solid time frame on how long it'll take for me to answer your ask/post your submission.Q: In what order do you post asks/submissions?
A: The order generally goes from: time sensitive/will no longer be relevant after a certain amount of time -> related or in response to a previous post -> chronological order (oldest to newest submitted). Things that aren’t headcanons, (in)correct quotes, or canon info tend to be posted once answered rather than queued, simply to avoid clogging the queue.Q: Is there a smashy-headcanons Discord server? Will you make one?
A: There is not one and there are no plans to make one. Assume that the answer is no unless I specifically say otherwise. If you see a smashy-headcanons Discord server, I'm not the one running it.Q: Are you accepting mods?
A: Short answer: No I'm not, nor should you ever expect me to in the future. Long answer: This blog is very personal to me and I've put a lot of work into shaping it to be how I want. Beyond my own attachment, that personal touch is something a lot of people have come to expect. While it does get difficult to run at times, accepting mods would mean giving up an immense amount of control, and would by and large take away that "personal" element.Q: I can't find where I can send an ask or submission, what happened?
A: 99.9% of the time, I turned them off because I had a lot of stuff in my inbox. Don’t send submissions or asks as a private message; I turned them off for a reason. If you absolutely aren't sure, you can ask.Q: Can we request headcanons for a particular character?
A: Sure, go ahead. It will take a while and I usually only do about 1-3 per ask, but I will try.Q: Are we allowed to ask questions that aren’t headcanon-related?
A: Absolutely! It can be Smash-related or it can just be something random. It doesn’t even necessarily have to be a question.Q: Can you tag [content]?
A: Sure thing, I'll do my best but my mind might slip on it from time to time. Warning tags will simply be tagged "#[content]", with no prefix or suffix added. Older posts may use “#mention: [content]”, but I’ve tried to move away from this tagging system just to make it easier for people filtering tags; if you see posts with this tag, please let me know.Q: Why are the tags so inconsistent?
A: If there's an inconsistency with tagging, it's because I've been trying to refine my tagging system. This should mostly be taken care of, but let me know if you find a tag that falls outside of the new system.Q: Is there a list of tags used on the blog?
A: With the frequency that tags get changed around, the limitations of carrd, and just general comfort reasons, the tags are only listed on the blog page.Q: Can I make my own SSB headcanons blog?/I was gonna submit this headcanon but it's against the rules, so what do I do?
A: I don't hold any authority over who gets to post SSB headcanons or run a blog dedicated to those, and I'm all in favor of people posting headcanons on their own blogs for any reason, whether that's to share headcanons that I don't want on this blog or because they were simply inspired to create their own blog.Q: Can I submit spoilers/trivia about X?
A: I may request certain recently released games not to be spoiled. Generally, read the Games I’m Playing list (either the little box on desktop or the carrd on mobile). If the game isn’t on there then put it in a submission.Q: Are those tags on a submission from you or the submitter?
A: While tagging order may be inconsistent on older posts, nowadays you can expect the submitter’s tags to be before any organization tags, and any tags from me to be after the #submission tag.Q: Can you predict this character for me lol
A: 1) Most “Apollo’s dodgeball moments” on here were more of a group effort than anything, 2) asking someone to prophesize for you on purpose is a good way to make sure the thing doesn’t happen, 3) I’m likely to delete asks like this to prevent spam. Not that it isn’t funny when it happens, but it’s best to let it happen on its own, y'know?Q: I don't like this rule, change it!/Tell me your stance on this internet discourse right now.
A: No ❤
An easy reference point to figure out what (SSB-connected) games I'm playing at the moment. Not a full list of the games I'm currently playing, but in addition to not being relevant, it's too long to be worth putting here. You can ask about what part of a game I'm at, but please avoid spoiling stuff if you can.
